The Aromas dos Salgueiros country houses are located 3 km from the village of Castelo de Vide, within the boundaries of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park and on a rural property with plentiful fruit trees and fruit-bearing shrubs, a vineyard, a hundred-year-old olive grove and an organic kitchen garden with seasonal varieties and various types of herbs. A majestic cork oak frames the three guest houses, lending its name to one of them. A fig tree and an olive tree also embrace their namesake houses, in full harmony with nature. The scenic village tops the horizon and is silhouetted at sunset.
In addition to the natural surroundings of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, the triangle of Castelo de Vide – Marvão – Portalegre has a wonderfully rich legacy of heritage, culture and tradition and deserves a visit!
Nature is our greatest concern! Preserving and working the land using ancestral techniques, respecting the seasons and productive cycles, reducing resources and advancing self-sufficiency, respecting good practices and environmental sustainability are our main vocations. Our houses were born from this ambition, but our focus is always on our guests’ comfort. The entire farm benefits from the use of renewable energy for generating electricity and heating water. The leisure reservoir uses a rustic pool, in which the water is treated without any added chemicals. Recycling and composting are other standard good practices.
Vintage traditional furniture, restored or recycled, was used for most of the decoration of the houses, to better fit with the contemporary environment. The garden offers seasonal fruits, which can be enjoyed for breakfast with natural or "Greek" yogurt, made in the sun. The warm, freshly baked bread from the wood oven is also irresistible.
Any surplus fruit or vegetables are transformed into jams and pectin, quince jelly, dried fruits (plum and figs), liqueurs, chutneys (condiments for meat made from a plum variety), paprika (from peppers) or tomato conserve. Lavender, a natural perfume, is woven into “spindles” that snuggle in drawers and wardrobes. Red wine is produced from the João Pires and Aragonês grape varieties, and then distilled to make brandy. Olives are seasoned to accompany meals throughout the year and are ground to extract olive oil. We also make artisanal soap from the by-products of the olive oil. All home-made!
The architecture and construction of the houses seems to obey nature. Mother nature determined and organized these spaces, and the houses and the trees are born from her, from a land full of life! All the houses have a bedroom with king-size bed, a bathroom with a shower, a living room with a sofa bed and a kitchenette fitted with an induction hob, microwave and fridge. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi and cable TV. Private car park. Breakfast included. Maximum 4 people/house.
With a privileged view from the balcony of the rooftops of Castelo de Vide, spending the end of the afternoon reading or enjoying the scenery is most inviting. At night the stars come out over the crown of an olive tree, dependably saluting us with its warm green, Mediterranean foliage. Comfort is the dominant theme, a harmony of the rustic and modern.
With its wide windows hewn open over its "own" tree, this house has a magical aura; the cork oak almost seems to grow inside the house. At night, the floor lighting gives the space a new perspective and a transcendental vision of architecture in communion with the natural environment. This house occupies the ground floor only, as this space was also planned and designed for guests with limited mobility.
A large stone stands as sculpture and centrepiece. The house has accepted this natural artwork and exhibits it as a decorative element for the space, an ode to nature. Outside, in summer, the broad leaves of the fig tree conceal the sweet aroma of figs; in winter they bid farewell to the branches so the sun can warm the façade.
Depending the time of year, you can enjoy various activities throughout the year, such as workshops related to the farm’s production (picking grapes, harvesting olives and lavender, drying fruit, making paprika, preserves and jams, liqueurs, bread and handcrafted soap) and nature-based tourist activities: walks and interpretive trails, adventure trails (with rappel, slides, bridges and more), observation of flora and fauna and photography expeditions, orientation and team building activities, climbing, mountaineering, traditional games, archery and bicycle rides. You can also enjoy the sun and the leisure reservoir in a relaxed setting, with the tranquillity and the scents of the countryside and the seasons.
